IKEA brings 6,500 products to Douyin as Ingka tests content-led shopping in China
Ingka Group, the largest IKEA retailer, has opened an official flagship store on Douyin, ByteDance's Chinese short-video and content-commerce platform. The move puts more than 6,500 IKEA products in front of shoppers in the place where they watch, browse and buy.
The store launched on 11 October 2026. Ingka says it covers 179 product categories, with delivery available in 301 cities across China. The company describes Douyin as a sister platform to TikTok under ByteDance.
A full range rather than a showcase
What stands out is the scale. This is not a handful of hero products for livestream promotions. Ingka has put a broad range onto the platform and backed it with delivery across a wide footprint. That suggests it sees Douyin as a working sales channel, not simply a marketing outlet.
Ingka is careful to say the store will complement IKEA's existing stores, website, app, WeChat and other e-commerce channels in China. It is an addition, not a replacement.
Lydia Song, IKEA China Acting CEO and President & CSO, set out the customer behaviour behind the decision: "People in China are increasingly moving between inspiration, discovery and shopping in ways that are highly connected and increasingly digital."
Built as a learning exercise
The announcement makes the launch sound as much about learning as about revenue. Parag Parekh, Chief Digital Officer at IKEA Retail (Ingka Group), said: "We will use customer feedback and insights from the Douyin e-commerce launch to improve the experience in China and bring those learnings into the broader omnichannel approach."
He framed the wider principle this way: "Retail is increasingly about being present wherever and whenever people want to meet us, while making those experiences feel like one connected IKEA."
That matters beyond China. If a global retailer is using one market to test how content, inspiration and checkout fit together, what works there may shape how it handles social commerce elsewhere.
What is not yet known
The announcement establishes what Ingka has launched and what it says it intends. It gives no sales targets, no early trading figures, no pricing approach and no detail on how orders are fulfilled. That leaves the most important commercial questions open.
The first is whether Douyin brings in shoppers IKEA was not already reaching, or simply moves existing demand from its own app, website and stores onto a third-party platform. The second is cost. Selling through a platform usually brings fees and promotional pressure. For bulky home furnishings, the cost of delivering to 301 cities could weigh on margin more than it would for smaller goods.
The promise of "one connected IKEA" will also be tested in practice. Shoppers will expect stock, prices and after-sales service to line up across every channel.
For retail leaders weighing their own social commerce plans, the useful signal is the approach as much as the platform. Ingka has gone in with a wide range, broad delivery and a clear plan to learn from it. Whether that turns into profitable growth is something the company has not yet shown. Its next updates on China trading are the place to look for evidence.
