YouTube Moves Into the Living Room and Brands Follow
At YouTube Festival in London on 22 September 2026, YouTube said more than half of UK watch time now happens on TV screens, launched Creator Shows and Open Call for brands, and released Kantar and Oxford Economics research on creator effectiveness and economic impact.
- 1Ipsos data shows 30.5 million UK adults watch YouTube on a TV screen, averaging 43 minutes a day on connected TV, up 19 percent year on year.
- 2YouTube launched Creator Shows and Open Call in the UK, giving brands sponsorable programming and AI-matched creator partnerships with full-funnel measurement.
- 3Kantar research commissioned by YouTube found creator ads on the platform are 35 percent more effective at full-funnel brand impact than on other short-form video platforms.
More than half of all YouTube watch time in the United Kingdom now takes place on a television screen. That single line, unveiled at YouTube Festival in London on 22 September 2026, marks a quiet but decisive shift in where British audiences sit when they watch, and in how brands will have to plan for the living room rather than the phone.
The living room is now the main screen
New data from Ipsos, released by YouTube at the festival, shows that 30.5 million adults in the UK now watch YouTube on a TV screen, spending an average of 43 minutes a day on connected TV, a 19 percent increase year on year. Across all devices, YouTube reaches 49 million UK adults every month, with viewers spending an average of 85 minutes a day on the platform.
For retailers, the significance is less about the raw reach and more about the posture of the viewer. Living room viewing is longer, more social and more considered than a scroll on a commute, which changes what a piece of commercial content has to do to earn attention.
Creator Shows and Open Call open the door to brands
YouTube used the same stage to announce the UK launch of YouTube Creator Shows, offering advertisers exclusive sponsorships and integrations into a slate of premium, made-for-YouTube programming featuring talent including Rio Ferdinand, the Global Cycling Network and this year's YouTube Festival red carpet host, Nella Rose.
Alongside it, the company introduced Open Call in the UK, powered by YouTube Creator Partnerships. Open Call uses AI to pair creative briefs with relevant YouTube Partner Programme creators based on brand affinity and perceived campaign performance, letting brands review submissions and then amplify approved content as creator partnerships with full-funnel measurement.
The trust argument, and who is making it
The commercial pitch rests on research from Kantar, which found that creator ads on YouTube are on average 35 percent more effective at driving full-funnel brand impact than creator ads on other short-form video platforms. That figure is Kantar's, drawn from its 2026 Creator Effectiveness Study, and it is worth treating as a comparative benchmark rather than an absolute.
YouTube also reported that UK viewers rank the platform first when researching, vetting or making purchase decisions, that 78 percent of UK viewers who see creators as experts say they are more likely to buy a product recommended by a favourite creator, and that 81 percent of surveyed UK Gen Z viewers aged 18 to 28 say they trust creator recommendations.
Dyana Najdi, Managing Director of Advertising at Google UK and Ireland, said that "this year, for the very first time, more than half of our watch time is now in the living room", adding that Creator Shows and the latest brand partnership tools give marketers "the ultimate canvas to tap into cultural moments and drive measurable, full-funnel results". She described YouTube as "officially fully shoppable", arguing that creators are "turning viewer attention directly into high-intent discovery and commerce, creating a seamless bridge from initial inspiration all the way to checkout."
An economy with a balance sheet
The 2025 Oxford Economics Impact Report, also unveiled at the festival and commissioned by YouTube, found that YouTube creators contributed £2.8 billion in GDP to the UK economy in 2025, up 25 percent year on year, and supported more than 60,000 full-time equivalent jobs. The report also found that 75 percent of creators with careers in media and entertainment trace their roots back to the platform.
Marking that maturity, British digital talent launched Creator Voices on the same day, an independent collective supported by YouTube UK to argue for institutional recognition and cross-sector growth in Britain's creative economy. The cohort includes Jordan Schwarzenberger, Santiago Vasquez of Futcrunch, DamienTalksMoney, Jade Beason, TLDR News, Grace Andrews and Brandon B.
What retailers should take from it
RetailNews.ai analysis: the interesting move here is not the reach figure but the packaging. Creator Shows turns creator content into something a media planner can buy like television, and Open Call turns creator selection into a matching problem rather than a relationship problem. Both lower the operational cost of working with creators, which has been the real barrier for retail marketing teams rather than any doubt about whether creator content works.
The caution is equally practical. The effectiveness and economic figures quoted here come from research YouTube commissioned or released, and they describe the platform's own case. Retailers planning 2027 budgets should treat them as a strong signal of where attention has moved, then test the commerce claim against their own conversion data before shifting significant spend into the living room.
